La Vega Independent School District

Gifted & Talented Program

La Vega ISD has board-approved identification procedures and processes for students in grades K-12 who require the services of the Gifted/Talented (G/T) services. These procedures meet state requirements (§29.121 & TAC 89.1) and have been designed to ensure the identification of any student who demonstrates an educational need for the services of the program under the established guidelines.

La Vega ISD utilized the State Plan of G/T standards of services as the basis for serving the Gifted and Talented population. The district standards reflect actions required in state law and/or SBOE rule. The plan includes six aspects of G/T service. The district strives to reach "exemplary" performance in all aspects of the G/T service design.

Notice of Student Nomination and Non-Discrimination

Nominations for the Gifted/Talented program may take place any time. However, Gifted/Talented pamphlets will be sent home with students at the beginning and middle of each school year. This will precede the upcoming assessment window for the gifted/talented program at La Vega ISD. La Vega ISD staff, parents, or other invested members may nominate a student for the gifted and talented program. Parents of the nominated students will be asked to sign a waiver for the gifted/talented assessment process. All assessments and determinations shall be made no later than March 1st of each school year.

The La Vega ISD school district does not discriminate on the basis of sex, sexual orientation, transgender, disability, race, color, age or national origin in its educational programs, activities, or employment as required by Title IX, Section 504 and Title VI.

Gifted & Talented Referral Process

Referrals can originate from teachers, parents, community members, or students during the referral period.  Students are nominated with a formal referral form available in the campus office or on the district website. Written parent or guardian permission is required to screen/assess a student. If a parent does not want his/her child to be screened, this information will be documented.
