Supporting Your Student in a Virtual Learning Environment

Parents and guardians are essential partners in student success within our Online Academy. While online learning encourages independence, consistent support at home helps students stay engaged, organized, and motivated.

By providing structure, monitoring progress, and offering encouragement, families can help students build the skills needed to succeed in a virtual setting. This section offers practical strategies to support your student’s academic growth, promote healthy routines, and foster overall well-being throughout their online learning experience.

Parent Guide to Supporting Student Success

Be a Co-Pilot, Not the Pilot
Provide structure, guidance, and encouragement while allowing your student to take ownership of their learning. The goal is to develop independence, confidence, and responsibility.

Create a Productive Learning Environment
Establish a dedicated, quiet, and well-lit workspace with minimal distractions. Encourage consistent daily routines and schedules to help your student stay focused and accountable.

Support Time Management & Organization
Guide your student in breaking assignments into manageable steps and setting achievable goals. Encourage them to track their own progress and build resilience when facing challenges or setbacks.

Monitor Academic Progress
Regularly review your student’s grades and activity through Schoology and the Home Access Center (HAC). Stay engaged by asking specific, reflective questions such as:

  • “What is your most challenging subject right now?”
  • “What assignments are coming up next?”

Model Healthy Habits
Demonstrate effective time management, the importance of taking breaks, and perseverance through difficult tasks. Students benefit from seeing these habits in action.

Understand Assessments & Feedback
Review grades and teacher feedback in Schoology together. Use this information to guide meaningful conversations, help your student reflect on their performance, and set goals for improvement. Emphasize that assessments are tools for learning and growth.

Acknowledge Effort and Growth
Recognize and celebrate your student’s dedication, self-discipline, and persistence. Positive reinforcement is especially important as students adjust to and succeed in a virtual learning environment.
